Shell:
Composed of two parts joined by bony bridges.
The first part is the carapace which is the upper section of the shell containing the ribcage and the scutes which are the scales of the shells. The scutes of the Bog turtle tend to be long, not wide.
The second part is the plastron which is the lower part of the shell. It is the turtle's breastplate.
Both of the two parts are made up of many small and flat, bony shields. These bony sheilds are joined to the backbone, ribs, and parts of shoulder and hips.
These plates are covered with thin and broad scales which are called laminae. They are made of a material similar to fingernails. These laminae give color to a turtle.
The plastron tends to be lighter than the carapace.
Other Skeletal Aspects:
The bog turtle has a small skull.
